About Us

Founded in 1999, APA is an all-volunteer, no-kill cat rescue dedicated exclusively to helping homeless, abandoned, and mistreated cats and kittens in Southern Indiana.

But what does that really mean—and how is APA different from other shelters?

Powered 100% by Volunteers

APA has no paid staff. Every task—from daily cat care and medical transport to fundraising, adoptions, and operations—is carried out by deeply committed volunteers who give their time, talent, and hearts to the cats who rely on us.

A True No-Kill Shelter

As a no-kill rescue, no healthy or treatable cat is ever euthanized.
We ensure that every sick or injured cat receives veterinary care, no matter the diagnosis or cost. We do not turn away cats due to age, FIV status, breed, or appearance, and we never euthanize due to overcrowding.

Euthanasia is considered only when a cat is suffering with no remaining path to recovery, and even then it requires agreement from two APA Leadership Team members. This decision is always made with compassion, dignity, and the cat’s well-being at the center.

Short Stays, Long Stays, and Lifetime Care

Some of our cats stay only a short while before finding their forever families. Others wait months—or even years. And for some, due to medical or behavioral challenges, APA becomes their furever home.

Whether a cat is with us for days or a lifetime, they receive love, safety, enrichment, and excellent care until they are adopted or cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Why an All-Cat Shelter?

While our community has several wonderful dog rescues, there are far fewer organizations solely dedicated to cats. APA chose to focus our mission where the need was greatest.
Last year alone, we cared for more than 130 kittens, and at any given time, we have more than 100 cats/kittens in our shelter, foster homes, and our adoption center at Clarksville PetSmart.

How We’re Funded

APA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and every dollar that supports our lifesaving work comes from:

  • Our thrift store, Purr-fect Treasures, in downtown Jeffersonville
  • Donations from generous supporters
  • Fundraising events throughout the year

Because we have no paid staff, 100% of these resources go directly toward the care of our cats.
