BARN/WORKING CAT PROGRAM
APA has several cats looking for homes in a barn, garage, or warehouse. These cats are not suited for life as pets. They are used to being around people, but do not enjoy being held or petted and avoid contact. We have three types of barn/working cats: Feral, semi-feral, and “friendly”.
• True feral cats have been trapped and want nothing to do with humans.
• Semi-feral cats are used to being around humans and are not as frightened, but still keep any interaction to a minimum.
• “Friendlies” are cats that can’t be placed as regular lap kitties due to issues such as minor biting or scratching or inappropriate litter box use, but they like people and, on occasion, will seek you out for attention.
These cats will only be adopted out in groups of two or more if you do not currently have any barn cats. Since these cats do not like to spend time with humans, it is very important that they have a feline buddy. Food, water and protection from the elements must be provided – this will NOT discourage hunting behaviors. Adopting one of these cats is a safe and easy way to control the rodent population in your barn, garage, or warehouse.
Once you are approved, our volunteers will bring the cat to your property and assist with getting the cat used to its new surroundings.
All cats will be in general good health. They will be neutered or spayed, vaccinated against rabies, examined and treated for fleas or ear mites, ear-tipped to make identification of the cat as “feral and cared for” possible without trapping, and micro-chipped prior to placement.
There is no adoption fee but donations are greatly appreciated. For more information, contact APA at 812-283-6555.
